Scellig Stone is a recent graduate of our neurosurgery training program, but is already well established in a very promising academic career at Harvard University in Boston. His academic interests combine his graduate work in functional neurosurgery with Dr. Andres Lozano, and his clinical fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery at the Boston Children’s Hospital.
Scellig obtained his BSc in Life Sciences from Queen’s University in 1999. He earned an entrance scholarship at Queen’s, and was awarded prizes for high standing in calculus and physics. Scellig graduated from U of T Medical School in 2003, after winning an entrance award and several other scholarships for high achievement along the way. During his medical school years Scellig took flying lessons (2001).
Scellig then joined the U of T Neurosurgery Residency Program(2003-2013). During those years he earned his PhD in the Surgeon-Scientist Program (Institute of Medical Science) and was certified in neurosurgery by the RCPSC. He distinguished himself by winning the William J. Horsey Prize for Clinical Research, the Warren Ho Memorial Scholarship, the K.G. McKenzie and Thomas P. Morley Prizes for Basic Research. He also received the Academy Award of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery Best Oral Presentation Award, the Bisby Fellowship Award from CIHR and two consecutive Joseph M. West Family Memorial Fund Postgraduate Awards.
Scellig completed a pediatric neurosurgery clinical fellowship in Boston in 2013-14, and then took up staff appointments at the Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Affiliate). He was made Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Harvard in 2014. He has been named Neurosurgical Director of the Movement Disorders and Deep Brain Stimulation Program at BCH, Director of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at BCH and Associate Program Director of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/ BCH/ Harvard Medical School Neurosurgery Residency Program. Scellig belongs to both the Pediatric Neurological Surgery and Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery AANS/ CNS Joint Sections, and a number of other pediatric and functional neurosurgery organizations.
Scellig is the PI or Co-I on a number of research projects in pediatric neurosurgery (epilepsy, Chiari malformations and syringomyelia, occult spinal dysraphism, CSF shunts, third ventriculostomy and choroid plexus cauterization) and functional neurosurgery (memory/ higher cognitive functions duringlong term EEG monitoring and deep brain stimulation for primary dystonia). His growing list of publications and presentations reflects these same two areas of academic interest. Scellig has given research talks, presented posters and been an invited visiting professor at many North American centres, as well as London UK, Beijing China, France and South Korea.
Scellig and his wife Angela have two children, William (10) and Adelaide (8), who are obsessed with dinosaurs, reading and soccer. Angela is very involved in the community, working at a food bank and coordinating a longitudinal school-wide educational program called ‘Understanding Our Differences’. The whole family enjoys exploring New England, the world at large, but especially visits back to Canada.
