Michael Garron Hospital, Staff Position, General / Breast Surgeon
The Division of General Surgery at Michael Garron Hospital is searching for a qualified and dedicated General and Breast surgeon to join our Department of Surgery.
Michael Garron Hospital (MGH), a member of the Toronto East Health Network (TEHN), is a vibrant community teaching hospital, affiliated with the University of Toronto, and serves one of Canada’s most diverse communities. Michael Garron Hospital has 470 beds comprised of acute care, rehabilitation and complex continuing care beds. MGH has a closed intensive care unit and full access to diagnostic imaging (US, CT, MRI). Michael Garron Hospital has undergone a major campus wide redevelopment project, and the new state of the art, eight story Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre recently opened in January 2023.
The successful candidate is expected to have completed or be eligible for certification in General Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and for licensure in the Province of Ontario. Qualified candidates must have a Medical Degree and Residency Training in General Surgery. Preference will be given to candidates who have additional fellowship training in a discipline of subspecialty general surgery, with expertise in breast surgery. Candidates must have an interest in teaching medical students and surgical residents and have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in surgical education.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience in leadership and exceptional interprofessional skills to further the divisional and institutional goals of growth and ongoing success of the breast program at Michael Garron Hospital.
The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to advance the strategic goals and vision of the Division of General Surgery. An interest in pursuing scholarly activity including clinical and health outcomes research is strongly encouraged. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the teaching, supervision, and mentorship of graduate, and postgraduate students, and fellows.
The successful candidate will be a full-time member of the Division of General Surgery and participate in the general surgery call schedule. The candidate will be eligible for an appointment to the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto at a rank commensurate with their qualification and academic achievement. S/he must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in surgical education and academic administrative involvement including participating in committees at the hospital and university level.

B. POSITION SUMMARY
The Department of Surgery of the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital is inviting applications for a visionary leader with excellence in academic and clinical leadership to be its next Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery. The Division Head will hold appointments as the Division Head for academics (university) and Division Head for clinical services (hospital). The successful applicant is accountable to the Chair & Chief of the Department relating to the academic mission, clinical operations and matters in fulfilling the mission, vision and goals of the Department, the Hospital and the Faculty, in particular as they relate to the Division.
The ideal candidate will be a nationally/ internationally respected leader and scholar, with advanced interpersonal skills and excellent qualifications in education, research, and clinical care. The individual will establish an overarching vision and strategic direction for the Division. The vision for Thoracic Surgery must advance innovative care models, strengthen capacity in research, and include a strong commitment to build on the current academic successes, including post graduate education.
The next Thoracic Surgery Division Head will join an outstanding and diverse team of staff thoracic surgeons, as well as residents and subspecialty fellows. They will be a leader who brings a passion for and commitment to the tripartite missions of excellence in patient care, innovative education, and research.
The Division Head has six primary functions:

C. REQUIREMENTS
- The candidate must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
- Applicants must have fellowship certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or an equivalent regulatory college and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario.
- The candidate must have coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).

- Proficiency in both English and French is an asset given the bilingual nature of the affiliated university position.

D. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The position of Division Head is a five-year term appointment with the possibility of reappointment for an additional five-year term.
The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for- service). Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time surgeons.

The uOttawa Thoracic surgery program provides tertiary and quaternary care for a catchment population of almost
1.5 M in Eastern Ontario. They also serve Nunavut patients through an interprovincial agreement. Thoracic surgery has close working relationships with and is supported by: Thoracic Anesthesia, Respirology, Critical Care, Thoracic Radiology, Medical and Radiation Oncology. There is also close collaboration with Cardiac Surgery at the uOttawa Heart Institute, ENT/Head and Neck surgery and Gastroenterology.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually. The Ottawa Hospital is the Level 1 trauma referral centre for Eastern Ontario. With a catchment of nearly 2 million people, our trauma program facilitates inpatient care for close to 1,000 patients annually.

The Odette Cancer Program is a regional cancer program, fully affiliated with both Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario), and the University of Toronto. It serves as the Regional Cancer Centre for Toronto Central North region offering complex, multi-disciplinary (surgical, medical and radiation oncology) regionalized care for breast, brain and spine, head and neck, lung, hepato-pancreatico-biliary, genito-urinary and gyne-oncological cancers, as well as rare tumours such as neuroendocrine tumours. We are also home to the Temerty Breast Centre and the Susan Leslie Clinic for Neuroendocrine Cancers. These services are offered in partnership with all Ontario regions, but particularly in the north-east Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The centre has also innovated with highly specialized radiation treatments including the Cancer Ablation Therapy program (CAT) that comprises Canada’s first MRI-LINAC, Canada’s only MRI-brachytherapy operating room, and a Gamma Knife ICON. Our Surgical Oncology program is a high quality and high volume program that has focused on health services research, clinical trials as well as innovative technological advances (example: Magnetic seed localization) Comprehensive general cancer care is also delivered with a priority to the local catchment area in the north Toronto community. Outpatient care is delivered through the Odette Cancer Centre. In 2022/23, the cancer program delivered over 40,000 systemic treatments, over 76,000 radiation treatments, and 3,000 complex cancer surgeries. A major focus of development over the next five years is to accelerate the growth of our personalized oncology program including expansion of our early phase clinical trial portfolio and development of cell-based therapies.
The Regional Vice President (RVP) plays an integral role in the coordination of cancer care across Ontario by acting in a dual role jointly accountable to the President & CEO of Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) and the President & CEO of Sunnybrook (or their assigned designates). A principle of this dual relationship is to be complementary, and therefore support provincial, regional, and organizational planning. Through leadership at Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) and the Regional Cancer Program, the RVP is responsible for executing at the provincial and regional level the vision, mission, and goals of Ontario Health (Cancer Care Ontario) and of Sunnybrook. The RVP is responsible for championing and influencing system transformation to drive performance of the cancer system and the region.

The Odette Cancer Program produces high quality research across platforms. Between 35-43 million dollars of grant funding is awarded annually to researchers, many with national and international reputations. Since 2014 the number of active clinical trials has risen with 400 clinical trials currently active and renewed infrastructure funding through 3 CTN (Canadian Cancer Clinical Trials Network).

The Chief of the Odette Cancer Program will work in closer partnership with the Sunnybrook Foundation to identify key philanthropic priorities, and to engage with potential donors to advance these priorities and make them a reality.
Candidates must hold an MD degree and have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent qualifications), and will be qualified to hold a clinical full time academic appointment at the University of Toronto at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor in an appropriate clinical department. Qualified candidates must be Canadian citizens with a Medical Degree and Residency Training in General Surgery from a Canadian University. Preference will be given to candidates who have additional fellowship training in a subspecialty discipline of general surgery, preferably with expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery, and acute care general surgery. Candidates must have an interest in teaching medical students and surgical residents and have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in surgical education. Target physicians: Those with a background in emergency medicine, anaesthesia, or internal medicine with an interest in trauma, critical care and/or resuscitation medicine. Outline: The Trauma Resuscitation Fellowship is a one-year training program open to qualified physicians who have completed a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) specialty training program in emergency medicine, anesthesia, family medicine with emergency medicine training, or internal medicine. Over the duration of the fellowship, the trainee will have significant exposure to trauma resuscitation and trauma critical care, with additional opportunities in burn resuscitation and pre-hospital medicine. At the end of their training, the Fellow will have acquired the knowledge and skillset to provide care to severely injured/ill patients in a variety of clinical contexts. The fellow will acquire additional skills in education, quality improvement, health system design, and simulation.
Site: The Tory Trauma Program (TTP) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC) is the largest Level I Trauma Center and Burn Centre in Canada, with approximately 2000 trauma team activations/year, 4000 critical care admissions/year (106 critical care beds), and 350 burn admissions/year. The TTP provides quaternary care to a catchment area of over 8 million people and serves as one of the major referral sites for large parts of Northern Ontario. The TTP works closely with Ornge, Ontario’s air ambulance system, which is responsible for over 4000 critical care transports per year. SHSC if fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and has a full complement of trainees across several training programs including all surgical specialties, emergency medicine, and anaesthesia.
Responsibilities: The Fellow will be fully integrated within the Tory Trauma Program and will have opportunity for dedicated rotations on the trauma, critical care, and burn services with additional opportunities in pre-hospital medicine. Over the course of their fellowship, the Fellow will function as a trauma team leader and assume responsibility for initial resuscitation and management of critically injured patients. Fellows will be involved in teaching of medical students, residents, elective trainees, and interdisciplinary staff. The Fellow is expected to participate in quality improvement rounds, Trauma Team Video Review (TTVR) rounds, in situ simulations, and other educational opportunities. Fellows will have an opportunity to participate in a variety of structured learning opportunities as a student and if eligible, as an instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and courses in POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound). Fellows are expected to work with mentors to complete at least one research project and one quality improvement project with the goal of presenting in an academic forum.
Salary: Fellows will receive full salary support that commensurate with the standard at the University of Toronto.
