Ying entered the very demanding Engineering Science Program as a University of Toronto Scholar. After graduation, she turned down a PhD research scholarship to Johns Hopkins to instead study medicine at McMaster, during which time her interest in neurosurgery blossomed. Ying is also an accomplished pianist and competitive computer programmer.
