Miranda Witheford
Qualification
- MD, PhD, FRCSC, RPVI
Dr Witheford was recruited to the University of Toronto in 2021, having completed an advanced endovascular aortic fellowship at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK. She was a recipient of the Harry S Morton Travelling Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons Canada, completing her subspecialty training in Vascular Surgery at the University of Toronto in 2018, and her MD and PhD from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Her PhD research was multiply awarded with grants from the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Michael Smith Foundation. Her clinical expertise in endovascular therapy for aortic aneurysm disease is now complemented by pioneering research at UHN in the use of advanced imaging software and artificial intelligence-based intraoperative assessments, to improve patient perioperative outcomes and to understand the long-term consequences of aortic deformation in response to endograft implantation. Her recent work seeks to uncover patient-related and anatomic aortic-endograft interactions that predict failures of endovascular treatment. She has been an invited speaker, presenter, and reviewer for Charing Cross, the British geriatrics Society, European Society for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery, Vascular Medicine, the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, and The Annals Journal of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Academic Interests:
- Modeling the deformational interactions of the aorta and advanced endovascular technology in the operating theatre and beyond, using imaging-based AI technology.
- Quality improvement assessments in aortic intervention, investigating patient-related and anatomic predictors of aortic graft failure during follow-up.
- Social justice and the equitable provision of vascular care across the province of Ontario. Dr Witheford is assessing barriers to accessing screening and treatment of aortic aneurysm disease and peripheral arterial occlusive disease, delineating the social and economic determinants of vascular care outcomes.
