Mojgan Hodaie

Dr. Mojgan Hodaie

Dr. Mojgan Hodaie believes that surgeons want to bring the best care to their patients yet many patients around the world lack basic resources and live with limited care, which impacts their lives. When Dr Hodaie saw an opportunity to address this surgical inequity she jumped at the chance!  She recognized that we don’t get to choose where we are born, nor what resources are available to us. Being affiliated with the University of Toronto Department of Surgery, has provided her with the privilege to share a vision with colleagues and work to facilitate the training of other surgeons globally.

Dr. Hodaie’s journey first began with her involvement as an Affiliated Global Faculty at BIHE.org where she focused on providing neuroscience education to students marginalized by socio-political factors. This initial commitment laid the groundwork for her endeavors in global surgery, and served as a catalyst for using online learning platforms adapted to global surgery. From there, she developed and deployed surgical education programs across Africa, Southeast Asia, and more recently, Ukraine.

Her efforts in global neurosurgery aim to enhance neurosurgical care in low-resource countries, through the development of structured, curriculum-based educational programs for neurosurgery residents using online technology that is available, accessible, relatable, and adaptable online. Dr. Hodaie’s main goal is  to raise the standard of neurosurgical training globally.

Training programs established by Dr. Hodaie since her initial foray into global surgery initiatives have equipped numerous surgeons with a structured access to courses that delve into anatomy, case discussions and advanced techniques, helping them enhance patient care in their own contexts.

Dr. Hodaie is the current Greg Wilkins-Barrick Chair in International Surgery at University Health Network. She considers surgical inequities as one of her chief missions – to help trainees that wish to be deeply involved in global surgery, and create opportunities for them to integrate and embed global surgery in their own careers.
